I also strongly recommend you make a bootable USB installer of El Capitan once it has downloaded but before you install El Capitan. Once downloaded you just follow the on screen instructions to install El Capitan 10.11. If you want to upgrade you Mac to a later OS X or macOS then first you need to go to El Capitan. They are grey in colour, the 2011 MacBook Pro original Snow Leopard discs also boot on the 2010 MacBook Pro as they also have a later version of Snow Leopard on them. You can find these discs that original shipped with the 2010 MacBook Pros on eBay by Searching things like 'MacBook Pro 2010 Snow Leopard install discs'. The retail Snow Leopard 10.6.3 disc you can still buy from Apple will not boot on the 2010 MacBook Pros as the 2010 MacBook Pros were released with a later version of 10.6.3.
If you definitely want to stick with Snow Leopard then you will need to buy the original discs that shipped with the 2010 MacBook Pro.
If your Mac has never been upgraded to 10.7 then the firmware on your Mac would not have been updated to support that so Command+R won't work. As you have already found out, recovery mode was only introduced with lion 10.7.
